Fresh off a season-ending playoff loss in New England, Jaguars defensive end Brent Hawkins was arrested on a drunken driving charge Monday after Jacksonville police said he sped by a patrol car over the Intracoastal Waterway.
The second-year player was arrested about 2:30 a.m. after police said field sobriety tests indicated his impairment. He refused a breath test, and his driver's license was confiscated, according to an arrest report.
The report says Hawkins, 24, told officers he had three vodka and orange juice drinks and said he had a previous driving under the influence case in Illinois, where he attended Illinois State University before being drafted by the Jaguars in 2006 in the fifth round.
Hawkins was released Monday on $2,000 cash bail. He couldn't be reached for comment Monday night, and attorney Hank Coxe, who typically represents Jaguars arrested in Jacksonville, declined comment.
Police said Hawkins was leaving the Beaches on Atlantic Boulevard in his 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe shortly before 2 a.m. when an officer clocked him driving 64 mph in a 45-mph zone on the Intracoastal Waterway bridge. Hawkins was stopped near Atlantic and San Pablo Road. His roommate was riding with him, police said.
The arrest report said Hawkins smelled of alcohol, and his eyes appeared bloodshot and watery. He also was cited with speeding.
