It's official: Williams to Jaguars
The former Redskins aide takes over Jacksonville's defensive coordinator job.
By MICHAEL C. WRIGHT, The Times-Union

Former Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams on Wednesday officially joined the Jaguars' staff, according to Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio.

The sides agreed in principle Tuesday before formalizing the deal one day later. Williams arrived in Jacksonville on Wednesday to sign the contract, which makes him the team's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

"Gregg Williams is an outstanding coach, has a wealth of NFL coaching experience and is committed to helping us pursue a world championship," Del Rio said. "I'm pleased to add another strong teacher to our coaching staff."

Williams' NFL coaching career

1990-2000: Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans special teams, linebackers, defensive coordinator.

2001-03: Buffalo Bills head coach (17-31).

2004-07: Washington Redskins defensive coordinator.

2008: Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator.

Named the successor to Mike Smith, who left to become the Atlanta Falcons' head coach, Williams, 49, is owed approximately $2 million for the one year left on his contract with the Redskins.

Though terms of the new pact weren't disclosed, Washington likely would have to pay the difference between Williams' deal there and in Jacksonville if the Jaguars' contract is less than what he was set to earn next season with the Redskins.

So if Williams' contract with the Jaguars is in the $1 million range, the Redskins would be liable for making up the difference. If the Jaguars pay Williams the close to $2 million that remains on his contract with Washington, the Redskins would have no financial liability.

"This is a very, very good team and a tremendous opportunity," Williams said. "I'm excited to be joining the Jaguars and Jack Del Rio's staff. I was there for the organization's first game in 1995 as well as a lot of other memorable moments, and have had great respect over the years for the ownership, the players and coaches and their success."

That's only going to help a team that was extremely overlooked in the playoffs.
