Torry Holt says he leads by example
Quote:
When the subject of the signing of wide receiver Torry Holt came up at the Jaguars' pre-draft news conference Tuesday, Jerry Porter's name was never mentioned.
Yet the Jaguars made it obvious they don't believe Holt is another Porter.
The positive things the Jaguars said about Holt off the field were a stark contrast to the reputation Porter had in his one season with the Jaguars.
Porter, who caught 11 passes in 10 games in 2008, wasn't considered a positive influence in the locker room. New general manager Gene Smith stressed that Holt will be as valuable off the field as on it.
"We feel we've signed a starter, a guy with seven Pro Bowls under his belt. More than that, we signed an outstanding individual. He was someone coming out of college who was very passionate about the sport of football," Smith said. "... He's a leader. He's someone who cares about others. Again, we didn't just get a player with the ability to help us win, but also someone who'll be a positive veteran presence in the locker room."
