Default Priest may be put on PUP list

Chiefs, Holmes can afford to take their time

By Adam Schefter

DENVER (May 24, 2006) -- Mystery continues to follow Kansas City running back Priest Holmes the way defenders used to, but at least now there are some answers.

A high-ranking Chiefs official said Holmes would undergo more neurological tests in late June and early July to help determine whether the running back can continue playing football. But even if those tests do not yield the answers that Holmes or the Chiefs want, Kansas City already has developed a contingency plan.

The Chiefs are considering the idea of placing Holmes on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which means the running back and the team could delay any decision on the player's future until the fall. If Holmes were able to return, the Chiefs would be thrilled to get back a player of his caliber. If not, they would have exhausted every option possible, giving Holmes as much time as he needed to return.

Either way, it doesn't seem as if Holmes' return is imminent, and the waiting game will continue well into training camp and possibly into the regular season. Already, Holmes is not participating in the team's Organized Team Activities at the team's Kansas City training complex. He has been absent, choosing instead to work out at his home in San Antonio.

The 32-year-old Holmes has been there for much of the time since recovering from a helmet-to-helmet collision with San Diego linebacker Shawne Merriman during a midseason game in San Diego.

yeah holmes is a great back but i dont think it matters if he plays or not if ur the cheifs becuz u have Larry johnson who is a great back up RB. johnson is jus a s good as holmes so the cheifs shouldnt really need to be worrying.

Agreed LJ is the main man, but they still could use Priest. If he can return to anything close to his old form KC will dominate on the ground.

they would dominate on the ground for sure.. even if he doesnt come back i still think LJ would rack up big numbers and they would still be one of the best rushing offenses in the league... but i hope Priest Holmes comes back anyways...

They are both great backs and have a great oline, but people are forgetting that t-rich is no longer there and he is the best lead blocking FB in the league. I will be interested to see how this plays out on the field. As for priest, this head injury seems to be more serious than expected and far as football goes, it is just football, never to be put ahead of life.

KC shouldn't really worry much about the on-field effects of this. LJ is a monster and can handle the back field on his own. If he would of started all 16 games last year he would of broke the NFL single season rushing and TD records. I expect more of the same this year. I just hope Priest gets well, and has no long term effects from this that cripple him for all of his post football life.

you could be right carbo, but don't forget richardson was a key part of the blocking for that oline and he is now in minnesota and I think people are forgetting about that.
