Default A rushing milestone

www.kansascity.com | 07/31/2007 | CHIEFS CAMP BUZZ
Quote:
Coach Herm Edwards said the season will probably be a successful one if the Chiefs can rush for at least 2,000 yards in the 16 regular-season games. They rushed for 2,143 yards last season and made the playoffs as a wild card.

That was with, of course, Larry Johnson, who is holding out from training camp this year in his quest for a contract extension.

“You want to be able to run the ball for 2,000 yards,” Edwards said. “Whether you have one runner that could do that, three runners, four runners, two runners, it doesn’t matter.”

In the early days of camp, Michael Bennett and Kolby Smith have received most of the first-team snaps, but the Chiefs also have been impressed with rookie Marcus O’Keith, and he could conceivably earn some playing time with a strong preseason if Johnson’s holdout is prolonged.

O’Keith ripped off a couple of long runs toward the end of Tuesday afternoon’s practice.

“This team has learned to be a physical team running the football, especially inside,” Edwards said. “Our offensive line has done a good job. It’s a veteran crew of guys up there. They’re very tough, very physical. We’re running the ball pretty well right now. That’s a good sign.”
