Willie Roaf Retires - an optimistic outlook from a Chiefs Fan
Everybody is saying that Willie Roaf's retirement is going to ruin the Chiefs offence. I don't think it will be that bad, in fact I think the Chiefs may be better off.
The Chiefs loose:
1. A first ballot HOF LT
2. An injury prone LT who only played in 7 games in the 2005 seanson
3. Possibly the worst LT in the leauge Jordan Black
The Chiefs gain:
1. A proven LT in Kyle Turley
2. Stability at the second most vital position on the offensive line.
I would even go as far to say Willie Roaf isn't the biggest offseason loss for the Chiefs, not even the second biggest. Who then was more important to the Chiefs?
A. Tony Richardson, FB, now with the Vikings
One of the elite FB in the NFL, T - Rich has been the backbone of the Chiefs running game for years. T - Rich will be replaced with unproven, 3rd year FB Ronnie Cruz.
B. John Welbourn, RT, retirment
Welbourn was a Pro Bowl caliber player at the most underappriciated position in Football, RT. Welbourn is being replaced by 7th round draft pick Kevin Sampson, who will be entering his second year. Sampson has alot of potential but only has 10 games under his belt, one of which was a start.
I think alot of the hoopla is because Roaf is a HOF, but I don't think he would make a huge impact for the Chiefs this year. He was a very good player, but was well past his prime. It's time for the changing of the gaurd. Everyone acted like Tim Grunhard could not be replaced just like people are doing now with Roaf, but he was and so will Roaf.

thats very true Colin, just becuase he had a HOF career doesn't mean he is a HOF player anymore. And it's not like KC is just starting some rookie in his place, like you said they have Turly there. I would have to agree with you Colin, nice thread

kyle turley has his own problems and jordan black is no willie roaf. This will hurt the offense plenty, just take a look at last year when roaf missed time, not only did LJ's numbers struggle against a good run defense, but trent suffered as well. LJ's numbers didn't suffer as much because they played some pretty poor rushing defenses, but this year it may even more.
also, people prolly didn't respond because there are like two other threads about willie roaf already.

Especially since Turley is playing only at 260 right now and doesn't want to add weight because of health reasons. Big loss, especially look at production totals with Roaf and without. He may be long in the tooth and mayble lost a step, but his technique and instincts are irreplaceable.

The loss of Richardson is really no big deal. They barely used him with Johnson...
Johnson had 192 carries for 1052 yards (5.5 YPC) in a lone setback formation. Only 114 carries in some sort of 2 RB formation (I or split) for 476 yards (4.1 YPC).
Roaf is a huge loss, especially since Black cannot pass block either.

I hope Turley comes in with the right attitude... Because we're gonna relying on him alot this year.
