Chiefs cut Warfield, McCleon, Barber and Stills

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday cut cornerbacks Eric Warfield and Dexter McCleon and linebackers Shawn Barber and Gary Stills.

Kansas City, which spent lavishly on free agents in an effort to upgrade its defense last year, is believed to be about $15 million to $20 million over the salary cap, which will be about $94.5 million.

Stills has been the Chiefs' best special teams player and was voted to the Pro Bowl after the 2003 season.

Warfield, an eight-year veteran, started 10 games at right cornerback last season, after sitting out the first four games of the year for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

those are some huge losses to try and overcome. They will still have a good offense, but all the work they put into building a defense is gone.

Not really the only one that hurts is Stills, I know I sound like a homer but he is one of the top SP Teamers in the NFL. Other than that Barber has been bad or hurt, McCleon was ok but not physical enough and Warfield was always in trouble or when he wasnt he was getting burned by opposing WR.

I hope Stills gets a new gig.

But this shows me one thing that Herm Edwards can do that Dick Vermiel couldn't. That's cut players that don't produce. I understand loving your guys but not cutting a guy that can't produce was one of Vermiels biggest flaws as a coach.
