Offensive Player of the Week
Julian Edelman, quarterback, Kent State (So. Redwood City, Calif.) -
Completed 14-of-22 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing 12 times for 61 yards at a TD, to lead Kent State to its first victory at Miami since 1988 and just its fifth all-time in Oxford. The win snapped KSU’s 11-game losing strea dating back to last year. Edelman’s 16-yard scoring pass to Najah Pruden late in the first quarter snapped a scoreless tie. With 10:44 left in the third quarter, Edelman rushed for a one-yard TD for a 16-0 lead.
Defensive Player of the Week
Jerett Sanderson, free safety, Bowling Green (Fr., Long Branch, N.J.) -
Sanderson picked off two passes in the final three minutes to stop go-ahead drives and scored on a fumble recovery in the second quarter against Florida International. He also had three tackles. Leading 33-28, Sanderson picked off a Josh Padrick pass in BGSU territory with 3:03 left. After the Golden Panthers got the ball back, Sanderson intercepted a pass in the end zone with 11 seconds left to seal the win.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Chris Garrett, punter, Ohio (Fr., Bristow, Va.) - Garrett had a breakout game for the Bobcats returning punts Saturday at Rutgers. The freshman tallied 90 yards on just three punt returns, a new career high. His 90 yards ranked as the ninth-best day in Ohio history, and his 30.0 yards-per-return average stands as the fifth highest single game mark.
WEST DIVISION
Offensive Player of the Week
Garrett Wolfe, running back, Northern Illinois (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) - Wolfe moved into second place on the NIU career rushing chart with 263 yards on 24 carries in Northern’s 31-13 win over Buffalo. Wolfe scored the Huskies’ first touchdown on a 49-yard run and gave NIU an insurmountable 24-7 lead with a season-long 68-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter. He averaged 11.0 yards per rush in the game while recording his eighth straight 100-yard game, and his eighth career 200-yard rushing.
Defensive Player of the Week (two honorees)
Josh Gordy, corner back, Central Michigan (Fr., Warthen, Ga.) - 6 total tackles (5 solo, 1 assist), 1 for a loss of 1 yard, 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Gordy stepped in front of a Luke Getsy pass 1 yard deep in the end zone and returned it 100 yards for a score in the closing seconds of the second quarter to send CMU into the locker room ahead 14-0. Akron had drove to the CMU 5-yard line before Gordy returned the interception. He also had a career-high six tackles, including one tackle for a loss.
Barry Church, safety, Toledo (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) - Church had 8 tackles, 1 TFL, one interception, one fumble recovery and one pass break-up. He returned his interception 84 yards for a TD to give Toledo a 31-23 lead with 7:19 to play. It was the third-longest INT return in school history. Tom Duncan holds the school record with a 93-yard return against Marshall in 1968. Church later recovered the fumble in the first overtime, giving a chance to win it in the second OT.
