Nick Saban and Ricky Williams were scheduled to meet Wednesday evening, in part to decide whether the running back should play in the CFL during his NFL-mandated suspension, with the coach expected to make the case that it's probably not a great idea.
Saban spoke with agent Leigh Steinberg, who represents Williams, and outlined some of his concerns.
''In our discussion, Nick raised the natural cautionary note that injuries could occur,'' Steinberg said. ``And coach Saban's perspective is critical to our decision-making, because we don't intend to pursue a course of action that isn't consistent with his wishes.''
A source close to the situation said Saban planned to make his opinion known to Williams during their meeting, but the coach finds himself in a delicate position. Saban wants to support Williams and not let it seem as if he's dictating to the player.
The coach also does not want to prevent Williams from earning money playing for the Toronto Argonauts while he serves a minimum one year NFL-mandated suspension. Williams can earn upwards of $150,000 for the season with Toronto.
Still, Saban would prefer Williams decide that the CFL is not the best course of action.
The final decision rests with the Dolphins, because they do not have to grant Williams permission to sign with Toronto while he is under contract to them.
But the source said Saban will make certain the decision is, in fact, mutual.
The Argonauts have put on something of a press to get Williams. Several former players have called Steinberg to let him know their CFL experience was positive.
The latest chapter in this drama should play out in the next few days when both parties are expected to reach their ''mutual'' decision, the source said.
