Turley tackles a new challenge at Dolphins' camp

DAVIE — He didn't get into any shouting matches with coaches, didn't rip helmets from any heads and wasn't even playing the position where he worked for six seasons in the NFL. So was that really former St. Louis Rams offensive tackle Kyle Turley catching passes Friday at the Dolphins' rookie mini-camp?
Turley missed the past two NFL seasons because of back problems. He decided to try tight end after losing more than 40 pounds to reduce the strain on his back. Turley, 30, was listed at 6-foot-5 and 309 pounds when he last played.
"He's lost some weight, he worked out well and he caught the ball well," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said. "This is an opportunity for us to take a look at him and see if he does have any potential as a tight end."
Turley gained notoriety for a December 2004 shouting match he had with former St. Louis coach Mike Martz, who reportedly filed a complaint with NFL security because he felt threatened.
During a game in 2001, Turley ripped the helmet off New York Jets safety Damien Robinson and flung it across the field.
Friday, Turley looked swift and relatively nimble as a tight end. He is one of a few veteran free agents at the 62-player mini-camp.
Ricky watch: Suspended running back Ricky Williams remained in discussions with Saban about how and where he'll spend his year away from the NFL.
Saban said he planned to talk more with Williams about the possibility of him playing for Toronto of the Canadian Football League.
Saban said he is not worried about Williams getting into trouble if he is on his own. Nor, Saban said, is he thinking about trading Williams.
"We want Ricky back on our team," Saban said. "Ricky doesn't need to go to Canada to prove anything to us.... If he really wanted to do it, it's something that I'd certainly consider discussing with him.
"If we just wanted to trade him, it would probably be a good thing for us to say, 'Go up there and gain 2,000 yards and we'll get rid of you.' But that's not our philosophy on it."
Saban said he would be comfortable if Williams decided to work out "in India or California or wherever he wants to go, as long as we develop a plan and he has discipline to that, which has never been an issue with Ricky."
Culpepper update: QB Daunte Culpepper recently received an grade of A-plus from Dr. James Andrews, who evaluated his surgically repaired right knee, Saban said.
"He has already participated in just about everything that we do in our off-season program," said Saban, who noted that Culpepper wears a knee brace. "His straight-line running is fine. He's throwing the ball. He's dropping back. He runs the plays and does the handoffs."
Saban said he would not predict when Culpepper would be game-ready.
