DAVIE - Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, the franchise's key free-agent acquisition this offseason, underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday morning to address pain in his right knee.
The procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., and will likely sideline the nine-year NFL veteran for most, if not all of the preseason, which begins on Saturday when the Dolphins host Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m.
This is the third time Porter had a procedure done on one of his knees in two years.
"They decided to go in and take a look at it," coach Cam Cameron said. "MRIs are just a best guess.... They do say it's something minor."
The Dolphins have invested $20 million in guaranteed money on Porter with the intent of playing him opposite All-Pro Jason Taylor, and this preseason Porter was supposed to be learning and adjusting to Dom Capers' defense. Now Porter will likely have to pick up the rest of Capers' complicated 3-4 scheme by watching from the sidelines.
Replacing Porter in the starting lineup is Donnie Spragan, who started nine games last season and recorded 46 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks.
Porter, a time-time Pro Bowl linebacker, missed most of training camp with the Steelers and all four exhibition games in 2005 after undergoing a similar procedure on his left knee.
He played in all 16 regular-season games and four playoff games after that, contributing 61 tackles and 10 1/2 sacks, helping the Steelers win the Super Bowl that season.
He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in May 2006 and went on to play in 14 regular-season games, missing two because of a hamstring injury.
