Dolphins right tackle L.J. Shelton denied a report he has been told by the team he needs to lose 15 pounds.
"I don't want to contradict anybody else's story, but I'm where they want me to be," Shelton said Thursday. "I'll just put it like that."
A story in Thursday's Palm Beach Post cited sources that said the reason Shelton has been demoted from the first team to the second is that the Dolphins want him to drop from the 345 pounds he is listed at in the team's media guide to 330 pounds.
Shelton, who checked in Thursday at 338 pounds, is listed behind Anthony Alabi on the team's first depth chart. Instead of moping about it, he's trying to work his way back into the starting lineup.
"Nobody's made it seem like it's an impossible feat for me, so I'm just trying to keep the right attitude and just keep working hard," Shelton said. "I'm trying to set an example, not just for my teammates, but for my kids and everybody. If things don't start out the way you want them to, work hard to change it. That's the attitude I'm taking toward it."
Given the situation, however, Shelton knows there will be more pressure on him to perform well in Saturday's preseason opener against Jacksonville. That means playing hard and eliminating mistakes.
"I think I've gotten better every day in camp," he said. "I'm confident in my ability to rise to the top when it's time to play, that I'll be where I'm supposed to be. If the coaches don't see (me) as a starter, that's where it is. But I have all the confidence in my ability."
