Default Porter back at Dolphins practice

Quote:
Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, who has missed all three exhibition games with a knee injury, took a huge step toward starting the season opener against the Washington Redskins by returning to practice Monday.

Porter, 30, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Aug. 7, practiced on a limited basis and reported he was, "ahead of schedule."

"I feel good for my first day out there trying to do some football work," said Porter, the former Pro Bowl Steelers linebacker who the Dolphins doled out $20 million in guaranteed cash to in the offseason.

"My goal is still right there to be ready for the season opener [Sept. 9] and right now I'm going to work myself up to it because I know next week I'll have to start practicing a whole lot, and really get my game in shape to get ready to play a full 60 plays in the game against Washington."

Porter is the only projected starter on defense who could be listed as questionable for the opener.

Porter isn't expected to play in the exhibition finale Thursday against the New Orleans Saints. For that matter, Cameron said, "If any, very few" of the starters will play Thursday.

Shelton impresses
It's looking more and more as if demoted right tackle L.J. Shelton might recapture his starting job from Anthony Alabi.

Alabi was pulled out of Saturday's exhibition game against Tampa Bay in the second quarter and didn't practice Monday because his right knee is "acting up."

Alabi, who hasn't started a game in two NFL seasons, underwent an arthroscopic procedure on the knee in April.

"I needed a day to rest it up because of the swelling in there and am trying to make sure it's ready to go," Alabi said. "It's a day-to-day thing."

Shelton, a nine-year veteran who started all 16 games last season for the Dolphins, including five at left tackle and 11 at right guard, was pushed by Cameron to drop some weight.

"We haven't finalized the offensive line yet," Cameron said. "He's doing everything we asked him to do. He's gotten quicker, he's in better shape, all those things."

Injury updates
Receiver Marty Booker was given the day off due to stomach cramps. ... Receiver Chris Chambers practiced with a wrap around his bruised left forearm. ... Reserve linebacker Robert McCune (groin) and receiver/returner Ted Ginn Jr. (strained quadriceps) sat out practice. ... Rookie defensive tackle Paul Soliai, who injured his right knee in the second quarter Saturday, practiced and said it was just a "tweak."
