Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller’s youth movement continued today with the team’s decision to release fullback Cory Schlesinger and receiver Az Hakim.
The move, confirmed by Schlesinger’s agent, Joe Linta, is a major surprise, considering Schlesinger lined up with the starting backfield since Day 1. Hakim’s release, confirmed by his agent, Charles Price, isn’t much of a surprise; the 10-year vet failed to catch a pass during the pre-season.
But given the direction of the team under Cameron and Mueller, it makes sense they would say so long to a 35-year-old FB and 30-year-old WR, even though they signed both during the free agency period.
The Dolphins have to pare the roster from 75 to 53, and will officially announce the roster cuts sometime around 7 p.m. tonight.
The way things stand now, 270-pound rookie Reagan Mauia will be the team’s fullback.
This also might mean RB Patrick Cobbs makes the team, with the Dolphins featuring four RBs and just one true FB. It’s also could mean good news for undrafted rookie WR Kerry Reed, who has outplayed Hakim and the rest of the group in the running for the No. 5 WR spot.
