2006 Draft
Ok, what positions need to be addressed this offseason?
Running back?? In a recent mock draft I saw, they have the vikes taking DeAngelo Williams, RB from Memphis.
Am I the only person thinking that Minnesota should use their first round pick NOT on a RB? Mewelde Moore is good but injury prone, Moe Williams is power, Fason could be good, and Onterrio Smith is the best RB on the team if he can come back.
That is four pretty decent RBs, I hope they do not take another RB. Instead what should they get? I want a LB like Chad Greenway. Anybody else agree?

No, they need to get a number one back in the draft. Williams is getting to old, no one wants Onterrio back after what he did, Fason will not be anything special and Moore is a great number two, but not a starter. In the 2006 draft there are three RB's that have better potential then the other four combined. i would like to see us pick Lendale. He could be one of the greats. Or if not him then we could go with Moroney and my last pick would be DeAngelo. The Vikings need ONE solid back, not four average ones.
I do agree with you on getting a LB, but i say we get one in free agency. the Vikings have around $20 million to spend and there are two very nice linebackers that could be free agents. the first one i would like to see us pick up is Julian Peterson. Peterson wants to get out of San Fran and i think we could entice him to come to Minnesota with some of that money. If not Peterson then i say we make a run at Will Witherspoon. He had a great year and should only get better with age. the best thing about this offseason is with all of the money we have to spend the Vikings could walk away with both LB's and a top RB in the draft.

I hate to disagree with a man about his own team, but that's what's gonna happen here. I feel the Vikes would be best building up the D first, especially in LB and DE. Whatever's left, they can get a decent RB out of FA. That's assuming they are unable to forgive Smith and just take him back. Good hell you guys, if Minnesota were to cut every player that's had off-field problems this season, they would bring new meaning to the expression 'rebuilding year'. Still, even without Smith, the focus should not be on RB. They have a sure coaching pick in Childress. He's the man who helped make McNabb who he is. He'll no doubt work one-on-one with Culpepper and that will bolster the offense enough. They don't need a star RB. This is not Seattle or Denver. Most of the time an RB doesn't win games alone. But great defense can.

The Vikings do need a star RB, even if Daunte comes back better than ever we need some kind of running game or else he will never be able to find anyone open because defenses will be able to rush three and drop back eight and not have to worry about getting burned on the run.
As for building up our defense we can do that in free agency. like i said we have $20 million to spend and we will be able to bring in a top LB.

If I was the vikings I would rather bring in a vet LB to help the LB core, Peters from the 49ers would be a good fit, they also need a new FS and back up CB because it looks like they all going to loose both of those to FA. A rookie RB has a good chance to make an impact on a team his first year, but with so many RB that are going to be FA how could you not look at one of them, Edge, J. Lewis, Alexander any one of them could help the running game and let the Viking bring in some one they can groom for the future.

That's probably the best idea. Draft defense, and spend your $20 million on an established RB. Especially when some of the best are gonna be FA this year. Then you can draft another RB next year and train him under the vet. If you take a rookie this year, he'll have to go right out and play. Unless he's Lendale or Bush, who will be gone by the time you guys pick, he probably won't be ready. So sign Lewis, James, Alexander or Green, and you'll have someone to train up a future star next season. Plus, there's also a lot of good defense available to pick this year. A.J. Hawk would be a great fit for you guys, and there's others too that don't immediately come to mind...
On a sidenote, What is Seattle thinking by not re-signing Alexander already? What does the man have to do to prove he's worth keeping?? If they let him go, it will be years before they see the playoffs again.

who could the Vikings draft that would help their linebacking core. Hawk will be long gone by the time we pick and is there any body else that would help the team more than Moroney could?
