The NFL announced today that Falcons defensive end John Abraham has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his key performance in the 20-6 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1.
Abraham led the Falcons defensive line with six tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one pass defensed. He also was part of a defensive effort that limited the Panthers to 65 rushing yards and 215 total yards. With the Falcons leading 13-3 late in the first half and Carolina aiming to close the gap, Abraham's sack and forced fumble ended the threat. Then after the Panthers had drawn to within a touchdown at 13-6 in the third quarter, Abraham's sack set up a third and long which Carolina could not convert. On the ensuing possession, Atlanta drove 50 yards for a touchdown.
The honor marked the third of its kind for Abraham in his career. In 2004, he earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week with the Jets in his fourth game of the season after he registered six tackles and three sacks against the Buffalo Bills (10/10/04).

Besides being named to three Pro Bowls, Abraham has also earned AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors two times in his career. In 2004, he earned the recognition for the month of October after he led the NFL with 6.5 sacks in addition to tallying 16 tackles, two forced fumbles, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery during the four-game span that resulted in a 3-1 record for the Jets.
In 2001, Abraham earned the honor for the month of November after totaling 24 tackles, 6.5 sacks and one forced fumble. His statistics were notable considering they were tallied in just three games as the Jets had their bye week on November 25.

Eh, I dunno about that.
He did kick *** in the first game, though. And his presence was missed in the last two games, especially last Monday night. We really could have used the extra pressure against Brees and pursuit against the run.
