That was kinda stupid on the Packers part.
They had to know Robinson wasn't going to make it out of season before the league came down with a suspension.
I'm guessing Packers GM Brett Favre insisted on signing Koren Robinson regardless of the circumstances.

No regrets about signing Robinson
McCarthy says risk was worth taking
By TOM SILVERSTEIN

Green Bay - Being left shorthanded at wide receiver because they thought Koren Robinson would be able to play more than just four games will long be a move for which Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy are second-guessed.
But a day after Robinson was suspended for a year for violating the National Football League's substance-abuse policy, McCarthy made it clear that he has no regrets.
"I clearly think it was the right thing to do," McCarthy said. "From a professional standpoint, we knew the risk we were taking. It was calculated and the worst scenario happened. But we knew what the possibilities were.
"From a personal standpoint, I think he's a young man who made a mistake. I think he has a bright future. He's in the process of trying to correct his mistakes. I clearly do not think it was a mistake at all. His experience here was very positive."
Robinson caught seven passes for 89 yards, the most important of which was a third-down play against Detroit that helped set up a touchdown that gave the Packers a 24-14 lead in the third quarter. He also returned 12 kickoffs for an average of 21.1 yards, which ranked him 29th in the NFL.
McCarthy said he could not address Robinson's future with the team because of league rules. The club can't have any contact with him at their facility while he's under suspension and he'll have to find a new support system.
Quarterback Brett Favre didn't hesitate to address the suspension, however. He blasted the NFL's policy that exiles Robinson from the team, saying the league turned its back on him.
"It (doesn't) make a whole lot of sense, if you ask me, if you're trying to help a guy out," Favre said. "If you suspend him for a year, fine. That's your call. But to ban him from the building and the support group that can help him? But at least let him come in where guys can say, 'Hey, Koren, can we help you out? You need someone to talk to?'
"I'm no expert, but I would think that you'd want people to reach out to him and be within an organization that can help him as opposed to saying you're banned from the building."
Favre said if it were up to him, Robinson would be back in Green Bay next year.
"I hope he comes back," Favre said. "The sky's the limit for that guy, and I hope he can stay straight. I would like to see him over here, travel with the team and do those things. But once again, I'm no expert."[/b]

FAVRE TAKES UP FOR THE BOOZE HOUND
In Brett Favre's world, it's not okay for a receiver who is under contract to hold out. But it apparently is okay for a receiver to drive more than 100 miles per hour in order to avoid getting busted by the cops on yet another DUI rap.
Favre said on Wednesday that he doesn't understand why the league won't allow receiver Koren Robinson to hang out with the team or work out at the facility while he's on suspension for a year due to his latest violation of the substance abuse policy.
But, Brett, the issue here is that the rules created through collective bargaining between the NFL and the NFLPA require a minimum banishment of one year due to Robinson's chronic inability to follow the rules. The league didn't simply dictate this; it's a provision that the NFL and the paid representatives of the players agreed to.
Yeah, Robinson has a disease. But his disease can manifest itself in ways that can harm his team, the league, and other persons. So if a player can't or won't get proper treatment for the disease, and if he can't prove on a consistent basis that the disease won't result in, for example, the player showing up drunk at a game and punching a referee in the face, then the player is medically and physically unfit to be on the field, on the sidelines, or in the building.
What if, for example, Robinson is permitted to work out at the facility for the next year, and he shows up on a day in April fully lubricated and drops a 45-pound plate on A.J. Hawk's potato face while Hawk is laying on the bench?
It's nothing personal against Robinson or any other alcoholic who plays football. But the reality is that, after the player has failed on repeated occasions to adhere to the requirements of the rules to which the NFLPA agreed, he must suffer the consequences.
He's not fit to be in the league. Period. It's no different than a guy who can't catch a pass or won't take a hit. There's something in Robinson's overall mind and body that makes it a bad idea for the league to continue to provide him with employment.
Unlike a guy who can't catch a pass or won't take a hit, Robinson gets yet another chance. If he can stay clean for a year, he can come back.

That article is ****ing horse****. It's "ok" for him to drive 100mph? Get your ****ing Packer hating head out of your purplepeniseating fan ***. Favre was saying you don't cut someone's support groups out from under them when they're dealing with alcoholism, which is common sense and a good point. This ****er is a moron. Was this PFT? Was it? It's gotta be.
Why does he even care what Favre thinks. Favre retired a few months back, remember? Braindead biased *******. Why even quote this hack? You'd get more input from my gas-filled ***. Here.. "PPPPBBBTBTBTBTBBTBTBTBT." Equally informative. And less deceptive. At least you know the stench of **** is coming.
