The Vikings released Dwight Smith this afternoon. Smith, 29, was a starter at free safety, but had off-the-field issues and occasional disagreements with the team’s coaches.
“We were just going in a different direction,” coach Brad Childress said. “I don’t want to cast any aspersions.”
Childress said releasing Smith at this time would give him time to prepare for free agency, which begins on Feb. 29.
Vikings safeties Tank Williams and Mike Doss are set to become unrestricted free agents, making the safety spot a very vulnerable one for the team.
