The Vikings re-signed their lone restricted free agent Tuesday and added depth at cornerback.

Linebacker Heath Farwell, who led the team with a career-high 32 special-teams tackles last season, signed his one-year, $1.4 million tender and said he and the Vikings would continue discussions on a long-term deal.

He also said he hopes to contribute on more than special teams this season and win the fourth linebacker spot formerly held by Dontarrious Thomas, who signed with San Francisco.

"I love playing special teams, but you don't want to be labeled as just a special-teams guy," Farwell said. "Obviously, I'm going to continue to hold down the special teams and I'd like to contribute as the fourth linebacker, too, and help the team any way I can."

The Vikings also announced the signing of cornerback Benny Sapp, a free agent who spent the past four seasons with Kansas City.

Sapp, an undrafted free agent, appeared in 56 games for the Chiefs, with six starts and two interceptions. He signed a one-year, $705,000 contract that includes a $100,000 signing bonus.

"I had a better offer money-wise from Cleveland," he said. "But I liked the opportunity here better."

Asked what he expects his role to be with the Vikings, he said: "To come in and compete for a starting job. That's where I want to be at to just come in and compete."
