Giants sign S Demps to multi-year deal
March 15, 2006
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - The New York Giants continued the shakeup of their secondary, signing safety Will Demps to a multi-year contract on Wednesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Demps will likely replace recently released veteran Brent Alexander as the team's starting free safety.
"I think this is a good fit," Demps said. "They need a veteran safety to come in and run the back end (of the defense)."
Since free agency started on Saturday, the Giants have signed cornerbacks Sam Madison and R.W. McQuarters and safeties Jason Bell and Quentin Harris.
"The signing of Will Demps should complete the UFA (unrestricted free agent) phase of our rebuilding the defensive secondary," Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi said. "Will is very athletic and can make plays."
Demps, 26, spent his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and started 46 of 57 games. He recorded 70 tackles and three passes defensed in 11 games last season before suffering a torn ACL in a November 27 contest against Cincinnati.
Demps became a starter with Baltimore after signing as a rookie free agent in 2002.
"I was groomed in a good defense in Baltimore," Demps said. "You just know when you're time is up and it's time to move on. I'm thankful the Giants gave me an opportunity to come here."
Demps was scheduled to visit Miami and Minnesota next week before signing with the Giants.
New York also re-signed tackle Lewis Kelly, who spent most of last season on the practice squad.
