Position change in Foxborough
Personnel director now receiver coach
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | February 20, 2007
The Patriots filled their opening for a wide receivers coach, hiring Nick Caserio yesterday.
Caserio has served as the team's director of pro personnel a position in which he monitored all personnel in the league and reported to vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli for the last three years. He replaces Brian Daboll, who left the team late last week to join the New York Jets staff.
Caserio, a standout quarterback at John Carroll University from 1995-98, entered the NFL in 2001 as a personnel assistant with the Patriots.
He has served in a variety of roles with the team since that time, including offensive coaching assistant in 2002, before moving back to personnel as an area scout in 2003. He was hired as the director of pro personnel in 2004, and also served as a fill-in running backs coach when Ivan Fears was on medical leave in 2005 training camp.
"Since 2001, Nick has been a tremendous asset to this program through his contributions in both coaching and scouting," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. "He brings a thorough understanding of our offensive system and personnel, and we are excited for his return to the staff."
The move from the personnel side to the coaching side is a bit unusual, although not unprecedented for the Patriots under Belichick. The offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, began his pro career as a personnel assistant.
Caserio and McDaniels were teammates at John Carroll University, with Caserio the quarterback and McDaniels one of his receivers. Now Caserio will be part of McDaniels's offensive staff.
The Patriots currently have receivers Reche Caldwell, Jabar Gaffney, and Chad Jackson under contract for 2007. Veteran Troy Brown could also return, while Kelvin Kight and Bam Childress are likely to vie for playing time at the position.
