Default Patriots release RB Corey Dillon

Patriots release RB Dillon

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) The New England Patriots released running back Corey Dillon Friday, cutting ties with the top active runner in the NFL on the first day of free agency.

Dillon, 32, split duties with rookie Laurence Maroney last season and has said he was considering retirement.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said the team appreciated Dillon's contributions in his three seasons with New England.

``Those contributions extend beyond his individual on-field achievements and his integral role in a championship season. They also include three years of veteran leadership and positive relationships throughout the team,'' he said.

Dillon, who spent his first seven NFL seasons with Cincinnati, is the top active runner in the NFL with 11,241 career yards in 10 seasons.

He had three years remaining on his current contract and was scheduled to count $4.4 million against the salary cap in 2007.

I think they should of kept him for another year or 2. Maybe in a lesser role like Jerome Bettis but still give him the chance to prove himself. Don't throw him under the bus yet.

Of course and he should, just maybe a few less carries if he can't produce. But he needs a good O line of course. He would be a great decoy too. Kind of like the Bears have Jones and Benson.

Funny. The Globe article was saying he would count $2.5 million toward next year's cap, and this one is saying $4.4. Its so tough to get cap figures. Everyones figures are different... who do you believe?

That being said, I wish Corey Dillon the best of luck in whatever he decides to do... unless his decision brings him up against the Patriots in the future, then I don't wish him that type of luck for that game.

In a year when no one was sure what to expect out of this guy, and all the talk was about the horrible attitude he had in Cincy, he helped carry this team to a championship, and a record breaking season for him. He has my utmost respect!

He thinks he can start somewhere else, he deserves the chance to prove himself right... and unfortunately, that isn't in NE.

Evidently the Pats have something else in mind for the money.

I'm not sure the Pats had anything else in mind for that money. Pats didn't really have much of a choice. Corey Dillon requested that he be released. Had he not been, he probably would have just retired.
