Patriots release RB Dillon
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) The New England Patriots released running back Corey Dillon Friday, cutting ties with the top active runner in the NFL on the first day of free agency.
Dillon, 32, split duties with rookie Laurence Maroney last season and has said he was considering retirement.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said the team appreciated Dillon's contributions in his three seasons with New England.
``Those contributions extend beyond his individual on-field achievements and his integral role in a championship season. They also include three years of veteran leadership and positive relationships throughout the team,'' he said.
Dillon, who spent his first seven NFL seasons with Cincinnati, is the top active runner in the NFL with 11,241 career yards in 10 seasons.
He had three years remaining on his current contract and was scheduled to count $4.4 million against the salary cap in 2007.
