Four Patriots re-sign for '07
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | March 22, 2007
The Patriots re-signed four players yesterday -- defensive lineman Mike Wright, linebacker Corey Mays, offensive lineman Gene Mruczkowski, and safety Rashad Baker -- all of whom were with the team last year and were expected to return.
Of the group, Wright, 25, saw the most playing time, appearing in all 16 regular-season games in 2006 while emerging as a top backup at nose tackle and end.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 295-pound Wright was a surprise story in 2005, making the team as a rookie free agent out of the University of Cincinnati, and he's carved out a unique niche as the club's only defensive lineman to play on special teams units. On defense, he was credited with 47 tackles in 2006.
Like Wright, Mays entered the league as a rookie free agent. Mays, 23, spent the first eight weeks of 2006 on the practice squad and was signed to the active roster in early November. He played in eight regular-season games. Baker, 24, joined the Patriots in November when the team claimed him off waivers from the Vikings. Mruczkowski joined the Patriots in 2003 and has played in 18 games for New England.
