I forgot I posted this... lol.
One thing to consider, which a friend of mine reminded of me later on, is that while we just found out about this long after Dillon was dropped, the Patriots organization probably knew about it at that point, and they wouldn't have let Dillon go if it were serious... nor would have Dillon wanted to go, cause he would know that he would likely have the starting job next year. So Maroney is probably fine.
