Default Seymour lectures rookie Brown

Earful is an eye-opener - The Boston Globe
Quote:
If Kareem Brown didn't grasp the seriousness of being suspended for the first three days of training camp for an unspecified violation of team rules, Richard Seymour, the doyen of the defensive line, made the rookie painfully aware.

"One thing that kind of hurt was Richard Seymour told me that he was disappointed in me and that I should know better," said Brown, who spoke to reporters yesterday for the first time since his suspension was lifted Monday. "Coming from a guy of his status that took a toll on me as a rookie."

Brown, a defensive lineman from the University of Miami, would not go into details about why he was suspended, saying, "It's just something you should know better." The fourth-round pick said he didn't think the team would hold his transgression against him long-term.

"They know me better than that, and if they thought it was going to be a problem they wouldn't have drafted me," said Brown. "It was kind of one of those slap-on-the-wrist, 'Come on dude, you got to do better.' "

Now that he's back on the field, Brown, who said he spent the first three days of camp working out at Gillette Stadium, admitted he has a lot of catching up to do, especially as he tries to adjust to playing in the Patriots' gap-control 3-4 scheme, the opposite of what he was asked to do at Miami. Brown, who had 11 sacks as a senior, the second-highest total ever by a Hurricanes defensive tackle, is fighting his instincts.

"Yeah, because coming from Miami we attack, attack, attack, attack, and here it's a different defense, so it's just an adjustment."

Brown said Ty Warren has taken him under his wing, providing tips to help him make the transition to the Patriots' style of play.

"It's helpful because he's been playing in this defense for four or five years now and he has it pretty down pat," said Brown, who has lined up at end the last three practices.

Brown was happy to start focusing on football.

"I was disappointed, but things happened and you got to take it in stride," he said. "Now, I'm back and just trying to do my job."
