FOXBORO, MASS. (July 31, 2006) -- Are the Patriots the same team that won its third Super Bowl two years ago? No. Have the Pats been dismantled like so many Super Bowl teams and now the run is over? No. Clearly this is a team in a modified version of transition. Look no further than the absence of linebacker Willie McGinest and his replacement, Tully Banta-Cain, a seventh-round pick from 2003 who has been a special teams player. Or even more to the point, look at the absence of All-Pro kicker Adam Vinatieri. His possible replacement is rookie Stephen Gostkowski. Wide receiver David Givens is gone to Tennessee for more money than New England wanted to pay him and the top Patriots wide receiver, Deion Branch, would rather pay $14,000 a day to stay home during a contract dispute than show up to practice.
It sounded like the sky was falling until I sat down with Tom Brady.
