Default Former Raider Jordan Signs With Pats

The New England Patriots have signed former Oakland Raiders veteran running back LaMont Jordan.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Jordan signed a one-year deal.

After being released by the Raiders on Friday, Jordan didn't take long to find work. While he landed with the Patriots, he also considered signing with the New Orleans Saints.

Oakland had little use for Jordan since midway through last season, when he carried the ball only 19 times in the final nine games. He fell further down the depth chart after the Raiders used the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft on Darren McFadden. The Raiders had been looking to trade Jordan for months.

With no trade to be found, Oakland granted Jordan his release instead of allowing him to report to training camp. He was scheduled to make $4.7 million this year and $5 million next season.

This should be interesting. You really can never have too much depth at running back, and both Morris, and Maroney are injury prone. You can never have enough good players.

My suspicion is that Morris is not where they had hoped as far as his injury from last year goes... why else would they need to do this. They have plenty at the RB position.

Unfortunately I thik your right. Like you said there's no other reason we sign Jordan if something wasn't up. But I'm not complaining, since now we have 4 good backs.

I think your both looking at this the wrong way. I think this is a factor for both Maroney and Morris. There both high injury risks going into the year. Most likely there both going to get hurt and miss time.

Just look at this forecast done by Will Carrol, who is a genius with sports injuries

Laurence Maroney (Red, 1,100 Rush, 300 Rec 12 TD)

So which Maroney are we going to get? The one that missed the first half with shoulder and leg problems, or the second-half one who looked like the dominant runner? Some of that second-half surge has to be put into context since Tom Brady was putting up historic numbers, keeping defenses on their heels. Maroney wasn't any better than free talent Sammy Morris was in the first half; both had a 4.5 YPC and similar success rates. The fact is Maroney has never been a pure feature back since high school and his fragility is the biggest reason. The biggest concern is the chronic shoulder problems that forced him to run more upright and exposed his legs. Maroney's risk keeps him down below the elite backs and will likely frustrate the guy who gets excited when Maroney falls to him in the latter part of the first round. Pairing him with Morris is a smarter play than grabbing Kevin Faulk. Yes, the TD projection looks high to me too.

Yeah but Jordan isn't really known for his durability either. I think that they signed him also because he was getting off to a great year last year and that maybe he could do good if he has to step in.

Maroney, Morris, Faulk, Jordan, Evans, Eckel. One thing is clear... one of them isn't going to make the team. I have them listed in order of worth, IMO. Eckel could be the odd man out, unless he has some value on special teams.

I had Jordan on my championship team the year he broke out... I believe the first year he was with Oakland. Even when he was with the Jets I had thought this guy has potential!

I've heard that Jordan is pretty good at FB as well. Jets fans were pretty angry when he was traded to the Raiders. Maybe this is revenge for them stealing Martin away from us. Lol.

But its not like he's going to be playing every play. Really is Belichek knowing that at any time one of these three running backs is going to be out with injuries. This gives him the depth and versititilty to overcome that.

That's what I'm saying. If he has to step in, he'll carry the load. For all we know, he could be rested and relaxed enough to compete for a decent amount of playing time.
