Default Patriots Sign Lynch

According to a league source, free agent safety John Lynch has agreed to join the Patriots.

The source did not have terms of the deal, but said Lynch had decided to sign with the Patriots. The NFL.com reported the deal was for one-year and $1.5 million.

The Patriots brought the nine-time Pro Bowler, who asked to be released by the Denver Broncos after the team slotted him into a reduced role, in for a visit yesterday.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said this morning that Lynch had met with him and taken a physical, which is often a precursor to a deal.

Lynch, who will turn 37 on Sept. 25, figures to replace Tank Williams, who was placed on injured reserve by the Patriots last Sunday after suffering a knee injury in the pre-season opener against the Baltimore Ravens last Thursday.

The Patriots were using Williams as a hybrid safety/linebacker in a pass defense package, a role that seems well suited to the 6-foot, 2-inch, 220-pound Lynch.

Lynch is actually coming off a Pro Bowl season. He was named to the team as an injury replacement last year, after starting 12 of 13 games and finishing with 59 tackles, a sack and three passes defended.

The source said the New York Jets also expressed interested in Lynch, but that the 15-year veteran chose to play for the Patriots, who tried to sign him as a free agent in 2004, when he decided to go from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Denver Broncos.

Default Lynch A Patriot

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- One day after visiting New England, former Denver Broncos safety John Lynch has reached a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Patriots, according to a source.

Lynch, 36, was released by the Broncos, who wanted to re-adjust his role this season. After talking to coach Mike Shanahan, the Broncos gave him a chance to land elsewhere. The Patriots were the perfect fit.

Belichick became interested in Lynch after losing safety Tank Williams for the season because of a knee injury. Williams was expected to be used 10-to-25 plays a game in certain defensive packages that needed a hard-hitting safety.

"I still have a great passion for the game of football," Lynch said after being released by the Broncos. "I still very much love it in my heart. I still feel like I can compete at a Pro Bowl level, but the situation is going to have to be right. I'm not going to just play for any team or any situation."

Lynch, who spent his first 11 seasons with Tampa Bay, played every snap in Denver's last three games last season, but earlier he was taken out on passing downs.

As long as the geezer can still decapitate, it's fine by me.

What does making the Probowl mean anyway? It's a popularity contest. I could throw some names at you too, buddy

Making the Pro Bowl means your one of the best NFL players at your position. While there is some popularity that plays a role. It doesn't dimish the fact that he was there. But I'm not going to sit here and argue how good last season is, because all I care about is this year, and I think that Lynch will be a great role player on the defense.

so you do know that Lynch and Harrison will never see the field together right? Lynch was never the best cover guy to begin with, and now hes lost a step. Denver was among the worst Ds last year and they didnt want him. he was a role player last season and im curious to see what role he will have in NE.

not necessarily, i can remember Vick being voted in year after year, and Vince Young made the Pro Bowl cause the 5 QBs ahead of him didnt want to play. All-Star game voting in every sport is a joke cause the most popular players are always voted in.
