The Patriots [team stats] quarterback did not make the trip to Tampa Bay last night with the team, according to a league source, and will miss tonight’s game against the Buccaneers with an undisclosed injury.
With Brady out, Matt Cassel, Matt Gutierrez and Kevin O’Connell should share the snaps. Cassel is coming off a 1-for-4 performance that was partly a product of sloppy offensive line play, a wet field and a miscommunication with Chad Jackson that led to an interception against the Ravens in the exhibition opener.
Gutierrez was bruised in that game, according to coach Bill Belichick, and missed three practices this week, though he returned for Thursday and Friday’s sessions.
O’Connell is a rookie third-rounder out of San Diego State who is considered a potential QB of the future.
Brady did not practice Friday and The Boston Globe reported on its Web site last night that he has a sore foot. Earlier last week, Brady said he expects to play in the preseason.
It might not be necessary, however, because he believes the offense is ahead of last year’s pace.
“I think in ways we are very far ahead of where we were last year,” Brady said. “We know what we can do. It’s not about getting lined up in the formation and running the play, now it’s about getting into a better play if the play we called in the huddle isn’t the one we like the best when we line up on the field.”
