It depends on who they QB are. If you have a guy you feel safe with to come in and start and is also young enough that you do not feel the need to bring along a young project then by all means go with two. If your backup is older or your not 100% sure he he could be more than a mop up QB then they need someone else.
No, this is football. Someone can go down just like that no matter how healthy they are. Bad luck just happens. You have to go with 3 QBs. Look how fast Brady went down last year. Had anything happened to Cassel shortly after that, and they would have been screwed if they only had two QBs. Its not likely to happen, but it could. For that reason you always have to have 3 QBs on the roster. It doesn't matter how safe they feel at QB, IMO.
Just curious, though, why would you think that the Patriots, of all teams, would need only 2... especially with Brady coming off knee surgery? Would there be some advantage to having only two?

I understand what you are saying but some of it also has to depend on how good is your 3rd QB. If he is a project that has upside then by all means keep him. If he is just a journeyman that has maxed out then why keep him. He is not going to be that good and if you will need him as a starter for a long period of time you would be better off signing a Vet that still wants to start but is seen as a backup now.
So why not sign up that Vet, instead of signing up the journeyman, and still have 3 QBs. With the Pats, it also has to be a QB that fits in their system. All I'm saying is you need to have 3 QBs, because if 2 QBs go down in one game, you can't sign someone else up during the game...
Besides, the Pats have backup QBs who have potential upsied. They have 3rd round draft pick from '08, Kevin O'Connell, and Matt Gutierrez has shown some promise at times as well. All the experience in the world won't matter, if they don't fit into the Belichick system.

How often does a team loose both their QBs in one game. It has happened but teams have also lost 3 QBs in one game. Because of cap reason no one is going to seat aside a lot of money for the 3rd QB. How effective can the third guy be? Could you not just us a RB or WR, for the most part they would be able to run the offense just as well.
Also you could go the whole year without ever needing the 3rd QB could that spot not be better used on someone that could get in the game.
2 QBs may fall in different weeks. Sure, if one goes down, they can look for another during the week, but its better to have one that knows the system half decently.
Are there a lot of teams that go with only 2 QBs? I don't remember the Pats doing that in recent years. I think generally speaking NFL teams hold 3 QBs just in case.
