Brees reaches agreement with Saints

By BRETT MARTEL, AP sports Writer
March 14, 2006

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Free-agent quarterback Drew Brees agreed to six-year contract Tuesday with the New Orleans Saints.

A team spokesman confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press shortly after the Miami Dolphins, who also had been courting Brees, instead traded for Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

Brees will take over for Aaron Brooks, who is expected to be released by New Orleans after his worst season since taking over as the Saints starter in 2000.

Brees has spent his entire five-year career with the San Diego Chargers, throwing for more than 3,000 yards in three of the past four seasons. He led the Chargers to a playoff appearance in 2004.

The signing could have major draft implications. The Saints have the No. 2 pick, which could be used for Southern Cal's Matt Leinart, who is expected to be available at that position. But New Orleans may not want another quarterback after signing Brees, and could opt to trade the pick or use it on another top prospect at a different position.

Saints officials did not immediately discuss details of Brees' new contract or how it may affect their draft plans.

Good signing IMO, Brees should serve as a good mentor for whichever QB they draft, even though he is quite young to be a mentor already. He'll probably start for the next year or two while the drafted QB is groomed, and then just be released or traded. He has really had bad luck in the NFL, being on the Chargers, having a great season, but then being traded because they have another young QB, and now being only a temporary solution before another young QB can take over. He never has had the chance to be the guy, and know his team believed in him...

I heard that part of brees signing with NO was that they wouldn't take a QB and that he was their QB now, so I know this will jack up any mocks that you have already seen.

Ya, I have been hearing that as well since after I made my post...It seems they are looking to move down a lot now, and get as much talent/picks in return...

i also read that there is a clause in his contract, to make it a one year deal being the saints option after this year, and he would be due a 12 million bonus right before 2007.

it is strange that NO would agree to that. I always thought Matt was going to be better than Brees? Now its your lucky day ellis there will be about a hundred new mock drafts

I liked Brees ever since he was at Purdue, but man 10 Million a season! Wow that is a lot of money. They better hope he plays as well as he did in San Diego.

I heard that too and that's a nice way for them to cover their butt just in case something happens. Brees sound like he'll be ready so that part may have worked out for both parties, although I think that clause is what still may keep a little bit of the possibility that a QB still could come to NO.

i don't know if NO can give him the weapons he had in San Diego. Sure the Saints have Duce and Horn, but they are no where near LT and Gates.
