ESPN - Sources: Saints rookie Meachem to have surgery

Saints first-round draft pick Robert Meachem will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee Tuesday morning and will be out 3-4 weeks, sources told ESPN.com's Matt Mosley on Monday.

Earlier in the day, the Saints said the wide receiver had to have his right knee examined for a potential medial meniscus problem after he missed practices Sunday and Monday.

Head coach Sean Payton said after Monday's practice that the Saints knew about a possible minor meniscus problem before they drafted the former standout receiver out of Tennessee with the 27th pick overall.

"We backed him off yesterday and the same way this morning," Payton said.

Meachem also missed portions of rookie camp the weekend after the draft when he sprained his left ankle.

That's not good, I had no idea there was a history of this that would hurt bad if he missed the whole year because of this.

I may be wrong but id worry a little when your rookie is having his second surgery like this, if he is.

especially since they have 22 WR's already. LOL

I'll never understand the pick, the Saints grab a 7th round gem at WR, and follow that up with, a WR in the 1st round the following year? Either they weren't confident enough in their scouting or they were too confident IMO.

im gonna go with the latter on that SS. swelled heads say pick best available but not when you have a plethora of the position that is one of the hardest to judge player potential coming out of the draft

And the thing about that is, were they even close to that "best available" position, honestly? I remember their defense wasn't all that and a bag of chips last year.
