I don't understand why everyone compares Smith and Freeney's contracts. Freeney has an average of over 10 sacks a year... Smith I believe got 10 sacks once thus far. Sure he is a very talented DE, but he isn't the freakishly fast athlete Freeney is and he isn't as important to the Saints D as Freeney is to the Colts. Also the Saints have some pretty big holes all around the D so I think they should wait and see with Smith.
Would signing Smith long term be a bad move? No.
Would signing some talented guys around Smith and Grant be a better move next offseason... Absolutely.

The defense was horrible. They ranked in the mid teens with an offense that could dominate both the clock and the scoreboard. They have no playmakers behind Smith and Grant, no talent at LB at all(Fujita is a good player but he is not very "talented"), they couldn't tackle, defend the pass, or force any kinf of turnovers at all. I love the offense, but this team has so many holes on the defense that Payton IGNORED in the draft it is ridiculous.
