Saints waive ex-LSU standout Faulk

Quote:
Saints Coach Sean Payton was complimentary about Trev Faulk's development in training camp, noting the strides the linebacker had made. This made it all the more difficult to cut the guy.
The former LSU standout was waived by the Saints, who desired more help on the offensive line. The team signed offensive tackle Nik Sobic on Wednesday, an undrafted free agent out of Harvard.
The Saints also waived receiver Dante Ridgeway and picked up receiver Derrick Doyle, who previously set the record for single-season receptions at Northwestern State.
Faulk was waived in 2006 by the Rams and didn't play because of a back injury. In the two previous years, Faulk was a key member of the special teams and started seven games at linebacker.
The Saints hoped Faulk could be a gunner on special teams, but fellow linebacker Troy Evans has emerged as the likely candidate for that job.
"That was a tough cut, because Trev's done a lot of improving," Payton said. "He made strides. But right now we're thin on the offensive line and felt like we needed to add a player there."
In the Saints' first preseason game against Pittsburgh, Payton said Faulk did grade out "all right," although he committed two penalties. Payton said the game wasn't the primary reason Faulk was released.
When asked what Faulk could do to make an NFL roster, Payton said: "I think the key is special teams and how many snaps he can play. He had been doing well here. That was tough because we were thin on the offensive line. It wasn't something I had planned."
Faulk played three seasons for LSU and made 119 tackles as a junior in 2001. He left school after that season and spent 2002 as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos. In 2003 he spent the preseason with the Cardinals and then spent the postseason as an inactive member of the Rams' practice squad. Then he played in 2004 and 2005 for the Rams, before being waived in 2006.
SHAKY PRACTICE: The Saints practiced only in the afternoon Wednesday, and the receivers seemed to struggle with consistency during 11-on-11 team drills. Marques Colston dropped two, and first-round pick Robert Meachem dropped a pass while open down the sideline. Tight ends Mark Campbell and John Owens each dropped a pass.
NO QUESTION AT NO. 2: Backup quarterback Jamie Martin has been inconsistent during camp, and he struggled during the first preseason game, but Payton reiterated his faith this week that the veteran is the No. 2 quarterback -- and the other three quarterbacks in camp are vying for the No. 3 spot.
"Jamie has taken all the reps with the 2s, and he's experienced," Payton said. "I know he wants to play better, and I think he will."
Martin struggled a bit during red-zone drills Wednesday, throwing an interception to safety Kevin Kaesviharn.
