The Saints have been one of the NFL's most surprising stories as they've jumped atop the NFC South.
While the offense has been stellar, the defense has also held its own and played much better than they did a year ago. One reason is a slew of new faces, but now the Saints will be without one of those additions for the next four weeks.
FOXSports.com has learned that the NFL has suspended Saints defensive tackle Hollis Thomas for four weeks for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and supplements. It's believed that Thomas did not test positive for a steroid, but rather something that was supplement-related for weight loss and/or energy. Thomas will miss the next four games after his appeal was denied this week. As a result, Thomas will not be available to return until the postseason.
Thomas had been one of defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs' most reliable defenders and a positive in the locker room.
The likeable and affable former Eagle and first-year Saints defender has started 12 games for New Orleans this year. After spending his first 10 years with the Eagles, Thomas joined Sean Payton's team this year and has 3 1/2 sacks, but is regarded more for his play against the run.

in that case why didnt he inform the nfl ahead of time that he had to take this ? i mean if he did the nfl is flat out wrong here.
I suppose the supplements helped him breathe to? If he was using steroids to help his asthma then it was convient because there are other medical options that have been proven much more benefical.
My wife has stage 4 asthma. There is no stage 5 (get the point) She spent a year back and fourth between home and the Bethany Hospital Asthma Program. Considered the finest in the US.
The steroids given for asthma are called short-term burst and they come in pill or syrup form. They are generally taken for 3 to 7 days with decreased dosages after that. the dosage is hardly enough to register on a NFL standard drug test. In severe cases routine steroid pills can be used for months at a time. This is only prescribed to patients with a chronic lung disease so severe daily activites are impossible. NOT NFL PLAYERS.

sorry, i just read this and made my own assumptions.
either way, he lost his appeal and is gone til jan 1st if the saints make the playoffs...which seems likely
Ok. Hold on a minute. Steroids you take to ward off asthma exacerbations are corticosteroids (prednisone, prednisolone, etc). They have NOTHING to do with anabolic steroids.

It's probably an ephedrine-related substance, not related to the asthma problems he has. It's unfortunate for Hollis--he's a good guy, and I'm sure he didn't intend to violate the policy. The NFL does however work with EAS to enable them to provide "safe for NFL use" supplements. All they have to do is use those supplements.
