Jets Draft Preview

Wants and Needs: Last season unraveled quickly for the Jets after they lost Chad Pennington, who needed his second major shoulder surgery in less than two years. New York acquired Patrick Ramsey from the Redskins earlier this offseason, but that hardly solves their quarterbacking issues. The venerable Curtis Martin is fresh off a disappointing season and a talented, deep class of runners will spark the team's imagination. The offensive line is also a concern despite the addition Trey Teague, and may warrant a first day pick. Their defense has issues as well. The Jets could use another pass rusher now that John Abraham is in Atlanta and some more depth at defensive back would be a good thing.
Potential Selections: The Jets would love Matt Leinart to fall to them at the fourth pick. Another option could be massive offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who would be an immediate starter. However, it is possible neither of them last to their pick, which would force the Jets to decide between the two highest rated defensive players, Mario Williams and A.J. Hawk. Their second pick in the first round may net a running back like DeAngelo Williams or LenDale White. Cornerback or outside linebacker may be the direction there, but don't be surprised to see that pick, the 35th overall one, or both of them spent on interior offensive linemen such as Davin Joseph, Eric Winston, or Max Jean-Gilles. Later picks will be spent to add some talent to the secondary, so Jet fans may want to learn names like Alan Zemaitis, Cedric Griffin, and Danieal Manning.
New York's Picks:
Round One: 4th overall, 29th overall (from Denver)
Round Two: 35th overall
Round Three: 71st overall, 97th overall (compensatory pick)
Round Four: 103rd overall, 117th overall (from K.C.)
Round Five: 138th overall,
Round Six: None
Round Seven: 211th overall
