HEMPSTEAD, New York (Ticker) - As expected, New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet is calling it quits.

The team has scheduled a news conference for Friday, when Chrebet will officially announce his retirement.

A series of concussions over the years forced Chrebet to end his 11-year career - all with the Jets. His total of 580 catches ranks second on the club's all-time list behind Don Maynard's 627.

Chrebet suffered at least the seventh concussion of his career, making a six-yard catch in the fourth quarter of a November 6 game against San Diego. Chrebet banged the back of his head on the Giants Stadium turf after being tackled by safety Jerry Wilson. In the locker room after the game, Chrebet needed help taking his jersey and pads off.

As the Jets' third receiver, Chrebet had 15 catches for 153 yards last season.

Chrebet had 50 or more catches in a season seven times, including a career-high 84 in 1996.

The best memory about him was that right after "me-shawn" dissed him, he caught the winning TD pass against him.

Yeah he retired last season after a concusion.

Yah, that sucked. But just another case of Keyshawn making an *** of himself. Anyone remember him being mic'd up on Monday night against the Colts in '04? He was blubbering about hopw anytime he plays against some othe rWR from his draft class he always outplays them. Harrison proceeded to blow that theory out of the water. I won't make any excuses that harrison was shut down until Kelly tore his pec muscle, but Marvin sure made our rookie 4th string DB look like a clown for the rest of the game. Poor Tim Wansley.
