Former Chief Hicks seeks fresh start with Jets - Newsday.com
Quote:
Eric Hicks has been in this position before, but it's been a long time.

The former Chiefs defensive end, who composed a respectable NFL resume with 44 1/2 sacks in nine seasons, said he is feeling like a rookie again. He's fighting for reps, he's trying to catch the eyes of the coaching staff, and he's not sure if he'll still be around here when the regular season starts. And he likes it.

"You start to get comfortable when you've been in one place and you've been a starter for so long," Hicks said yesterday. "Coming here, there's definitely motivation to go out and show what I can do."

Last year Hicks had only seven tackles and was not a regular starter for the first time since 1999. "I think some people were scared off after my shoulder surgery [after the 2005 season]," he said. "People may not have thought I was healthy. But [the Jets] gave me an opportunity and I'm going to fight for whatever I can get."

Rules and regulations

Eric Mangini said there are very specific rules governing player behavior and conduct detrimental to the team. "The players all got those rules and they clearly were defined and articulated," Mangini said.

Guard Pete Kendall, who has voiced disgust with the organization lately and is seeking to be traded or released, said he has not been disciplined. Which makes one wonder: What's a guy gotta say to get fined around here?

That there has been no punishment for Kendall (Mangini would not confirm that and said all matters of discipline are internal) might suggest that the Jets are waiting for the situation to run its course and will release him. But even Kendall, who would likely sign with an AFC East rival such as Miami if he were cut, said it seems odd he's here for the installation of the offense if he'll be leaving. Such top-secret information would greatly aid an opponent.

Kendall did not practice for the second straight workout because of a leg injury and rode the stationary bike on the sideline. Stationary is the last place he wants to be.
