Jets starting SS Erik Coleman hasn't practiced since July 28 because of an "illness," said coach Eric Mangini, who has declined to reveal any specifics. Turns out that Coleman underwent surgery last Wednesday to have his appendix removed, his agent told the Daily News yesterday.
Based on that timetable, Coleman almost certainly will miss the first two preseason games. By the time he returns, it will have been a three-week layoff, which will affect his conditioning and could jeopardize his chances of starting in Week 1 at Tennessee.

Drew Coleman, who went down with what appeared to be a potentially serious knee injury in Sunday's intrasquad scrimmage. A MRI exam revealed a bone bruise and a mild sprain to the medial collateral ligament. Coleman, who has been playing in the dime package, should miss at least one game, but it's not believed to be serious.

Bad to hear the Erik Coleman part... he's been excellent in the run support for us the past 2 seasons. Hopefully he'll be set to start by week 2. Rhodes can pick up the slack for one week.
Also good to hear about Drew Coleman, although I don't know why he'd be in a dime package while we have Dyson, Miller, Barrett, and Strait...
