Default Jets guarantee Laveranues Coles $11M

Jets guarantee Laveranues Coles $11M

Instead of extending Laveranues Coles' contract and pouring new money into the deal, the Jets placated the veteran wide receiver Friday by guaranteeing the final two years of his current contract, according to an NFL source. The total guarantee is $11 million, his combined salary for 2008 and 2009.

Coles wanted a new, long-term deal, but he accepted the compromise and reported Monday to the voluntary offseason conditioning program after skipping the first week. He had been threatening to sit out until training camp, which would've created acrimony.

The Jets were under no obligation to do anything, but they wanted to avoid another Pete Kendall situation and took the unusual step of guaranteeing Coles' money. That offer had been on the table for more than a month. Most contracts in the NFL aren't guaranteed. It's believed they promised to revisit his contract in a year if he has a good season.

Coles, 30, hampered by injuries, caught only 55 passes last season, his lowest total since his rookie year.
