As expected, Jets safety Eric Smith yesterday officially appealed his one-game suspension for his hit on Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin. The appeal will be heard today by the NFL office.
Smith was fined $50,000 (a week's pay) and suspended for Sunday's game against the Bengals for his helmet-to-helmet hit that injured Boldin. His appeal to the league will be based on the fact that Boldin was knocked forward from a hit from behind by teammate Kerry Rhodes just before Smith made contact, that it was a bang-bang play, he had no malicious intention and he has no prior history of dirty play.
Coach Eric Mangini said he expects the league to rule on the issue by later today.

I think the fact that he was bumped makes a huge difference.
