Question
Lets say a senior who is a first overall draft prospect doesnt want to enter the draft because he wants to play for a certain team that he knows he couldnt possibly go to, could he just not enter the draft like he was giving up football to pursue a new career and just sign a big money contract with the team he wants....like if the team was willing to give him first overall money without drafting him.
Im not sure how this works, could something like that happen?

Could it happen? If it did, the player would be a undrafted free agent and will not get a huge contract or signing bonus. And that's what first rounders are lookin' for. Better to jump into the draft, play a few of years and work on getting what you want in free agency.

I would think there would have to be some type of rule against that, but I'm not exactly well versed in the NFL FA regulations.

Problably in the union by-laws or something to that effect. Also the owners might have a unwritten rule about something like that to happen.

No, it doesn't work like that K Train. I'm about 99.99% sure that if you do that, you have to enter the draft again the following year. For example, Bo Jackson did that. He got drafted (I THINK) #1 overall, but didn't wish to play for that team, so he went and played baseball for a year or something, and then re-entered the draft the next year, where he was taken in the (I THINK) 7th round by the Raiders. John Elway did something simliar too I think, being drafted initially by the Colts, refusing to play for them, and I don't recall for sure if he was traded like Eli, or if he did the baseball thing too (he was drafted by the Yankees or something as well) and re-entered the draft.
I do know for a fact that Bo was in the draft twice though, got drafted very early but refused to play for them, and ended up coming back the next draft and went in the 7th round. He lost himself a lot of money there, but being a 2 sport star like he was I don't think he was hurting anyway.

Yeah, I was thinking that, but wasn't sure. I knew he got drafted for baseball too, but it was so long ago I forgot what happened for sure. Thanks for the clarification.
