Default The supplemental draft is right around the corner

1000 year old Gil Brandt's supplemental draft primer

May 18, 2006) -- For those of you experiencing a little post-NFL Draft withdrawal, there's good news: The 2006 Supplemental Draft is just around the corner.

This years' supplemental draft is tentatively scheduled for July 13. Rules of the supplemental draft stipulate that it has to take place at least 10 days prior to opening of the first training camp.

Draft order is determined by a weighted system that is divided into three groupings. First come the teams that had six or fewer wins last season, followed by non-playoff teams that had more than six wins, followed by the 12 playoff teams.

The first time the supplemental draft came into play was in 1977, when Al Hunter, a running back from Notre Dame, was selected in the fourth round by the Seattle Seahawks.

Of course, in order for a team to select someone, it must have that choice available in the following year's regular draft -- and that's the pick it will give up to make the supplemental pick.

Some of the names you may recall that have been selected in supplemental drafts through the years include linebacker Brian Bosworth, a first-round pick of the Seahawks in 1987; Washington State QB Tim Rosenbach, taken by the Cardinals in 1989; Miami QB Steve Walsh, also taken in 1989 by the Dallas Cowboys; and Duke QB Dave Brown, who was selected by the Giants in 1992.

More recently, San Diego defensive tackle Jamal Williams was a second-round supplemental pick in 1998, and he's become a terrific run-stuffer for the Chargers.

The paperwork hasn't officially been filed yet for this year's supplemental draft, but there are at least two players who will get a close look from scouts around the league:

* Ahmad Brooks, LB, Virginia: A national defensive player of the year coming out of high school, Brooks had an outstanding 2004 season for the Cavaliers in 2004, but got hurt last year.
* Jason Berryman, DE, Iowa State: At about 240 pounds, he's probably a linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. His Pro Day is already set for June 6 at Iowa State, and we'll have reports on that.

With so many teams moving to a 3-4 defence and teams like the Colts having success with small DE I would think that both of them would be drafted. Brooks could be asa high as a second and it would not surprise me if someone spent a 1st round on him. Teams get nervus in the sup draft when their is a player they like it is hard to tell what other teams are thinking. It is easy for a coach to say we get a player this year for a pick next.

I would be surprised to see some team use a #1 on either as #1 picks are so valuable in the NFL, just for the shear fact about the attitude problems. I say a second would be worth brooks, and I would hope the eagles take him, but they don't value LB's that high and have had success taking LB's later in the draft. I think both will be taken though.

Early supplemental entries
By John Murphy, Yahoo! Sports

Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, Texas fullback Ahmard Hall, Iowa State defensive end/linebacker Jason Berryman and Hutchinson (Kan.) Junior College linebacker Dave Dixon have gained entry to the NFL supplemental draft on July 13, according to the league's player personnel office.

Brooks and Hall have workouts scheduled for Thursday. Dixon's pro day will take place next Monday at Westbrook High School in Beaumont, Texas, where already seven teams are planning to send a scout.

Players have until June 30 to submit paperwork for review by the NFL's player personnel department, and they cannot schedule "pro day"-type workouts until their applications have been approved. Any NFL team that would attend or work out a player before that time would be subject to a fine or possible loss of a future draft choice.

"All players must request and then file paperwork with our office before being granted special eligibility to the [supplemental] draft," one NFL player personnel staff member said. "[We] do not encourage or make public these rules as we are not in the market of recruiting or enticing prospects."

"This draft is for the sole purpose of dealing with issues that arise after the regular draft, not as an option for players that want to jump into our league", another staff member explained.

One potential supplemental draft prospect – former Minnesota running back Gary Russell – who was expected to replace New England Patriots rookie Laurence Maroney as the Golden Gophers' featured back this season – has not sought entry, according to the league office. But Russell has few other options.

Dismissed by the school last winter for academic problems, Russell is not enrolled at Minnesota for the summer after taking junior college classes in the spring with hopes of re-joining the Gophers, and it is unknown whether he is planning to enroll this fall. School officials will only comment on players on the 2006 roster.

He could sit out the 2006 season and hope to complete the two years of eligibility he has remaining. He could also transfer to an NAIA school since Division I-AA and Division II programs are not allowed to accept Division I-A athletes who are not in good academic standing at their prior program. Or Russell could spend the rest of this year preparing for the 2007 NFL draft.
