It is that time a year again t get ready for this year draft. I think a good thing to do is to look back at last years draft.
Dallas Cowboys
The Good: They got help from several picks Carpenter, Fasano, Hatcher, and Watkins. There is some talk with in the organization that McQuisten could be the future starter at LT.
The Bad: Depending on the health of Ellis Carpenter might only be a backup again this year.
The Ugly: 4th Round Skyler Green he was suppose to be the answer for KR/PR and could get on some special offensive plays. Instead hw was not a good return man could not make it as a WR and I no longer on the team.
Overall: Not a bad draft seem to got some players that can help the team now and start down the road. Would have like to seen more impact from Carpenter. Grade B-
New York Giants
The Good: Barry Cofield was a real fined in the 4th round. He was able to become a starter from week 1 and help out the on the inside of the line that has been a real problem for the Giants.
The Bad: The last two picks were not even able to make the team.
The Ugly: Sinorice Moss was drafted in the second round to add a spark to the Giants passing game but because of a hurt quad he made little impact.
Overall: Three out of the first four picks should help the team next year with Moss being the question mark. Grade C+
Philadelphia Eagles
The Good: 5th round pick Omar Gaither was able to handle some starting duties during the season a real find.
The Bad: Bunkley has the look of a bust if he does not turn it around this year.
The Ugly: Justice, Gocong, Jean-Gills, and Bloom for one reason or another wear not able to make it into any games. Gocong and Bloom because of injuries.
Overall: They did not get much from this draft this year and most are expected to only add depth next. This is the kind of draft you expect from a team that loaded with players already. Grade B+
Washington Redskins
The Good: 6th round pick Kedric Golston while still needs to improve he was by far the best rookie in the bunch.
The Bad: While you do not always think a 7th round pick to make the team on a team that is always in need of young depth and never having a lot of picks they need to make all of them count.
The Ugly: Rocky McIntosh was a reach and should not have been traded up for he should have been able to help the Redskins with the way some of their other LB had played.
Overall: While they did get a starter in Golston and McIntosh might start this year this draft shows what the Redskins think of the draft and why. Grade D
The NFC East is a great case study on how the draft should be used. The Eagles, the best team in the division last year, draft for the future and seem to have a plan while the Redskins, who finished in last place in the division, view the draft as a afterthought to FA. A sign of thing that have turned around from when this division was the Eagles and then no one else both the Cowboys and Giants have been drafting more for the future instead of having to fill a whole and both made the playoffs last year.
justice and giles didn't play because they were not needed and given the year, Bloom was a late late late boom or bust pick, gaither was a great pick and gocong will show people things this year. Bunkley started playing better at the end of the year and should turn into a beast this year with a better all around LB's and S's helping the line. I give the EAGLES an A-
When give a grade for a draft I try and take all things into account. While Justice and Jean-Gills did not do much this year they were picks made for when Thomas and Ruyan step down. Justice takes over for at LT and Jean-Gills starts at RG and lets Andrews move to RT. That is planning ahead it is what the draft is all about. It is not to fill needs this year because you can never count on a rookie. FA is where you fill holes the Draft is where you build for the future and the Eagles are a team that not only get it but one of the few that have been able to make it happen.
