Talented Peterson heads solid running back class

The following is the second of eight position previews in advance of the NFL Draft.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Possessing a rare combination of speed, power and size, running back Adrian Peterson figures to be among the top three picks in the April 28-29 NFL Draft.
The former Oklahoma star is an incredibly competitive and tough runner who takes pride in breaking tackles and picks up most of his yards after contact. He also has the speed to turn the corner and the instincts and vision to elude tacklers.
Many draft experts are predicting that Adrian Peterson will be selected by the Cleveland Browns with the third pick.
Peterson has been ultra-productive since he stepped on the Oklahoma campus. The 6-1½, 217-pounder finished second in Heisman Trophy voting after setting the school and NCAA freshman single-season rushing record with 1,925 yards and 15 touchdowns on 339 carries.
As a sophomore in 2005, Peterson rushed for 1,108 yards and 14 TDs on 220 attempts despite missing parts of three midseason games and the entire Baylor contest with a high ankle sprain. He then rushed for 1,012 yards and 12 TDs on 188 carries as a junior last season even though he sat out seven games with a broken collarbone.
One of the only knocks on Peterson is his durability, especially given the volume of contact that he typically initiates with defenders. He also runs in an upright position, a style that has drawn comparisons to Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric ****erson.
“Being compared to Eric ****erson, that’s crazy,” Peterson said in February at the NFL Scouting Combine. “He’s one of the greatest running backs. It’s an honor to be compared to him.”
Many scouts feel that Peterson has the potential to become one of the game’s elite players. According to Pro Football Weekly’s 2007 Draft Preview, he “has the sheer determination and fiery competitive drive to be the best back in football in a very short amount of time.”
The publication calls Peterson “the most competitive football player in the draft at a position where competitiveness could not be more important” and “an all-out warrior who seeks to destroy anyone in his way.”
