Thomas one of the biggest fish in NFL draft pond
By Larry Mayer

The following is the fifth of eight position previews in advance of the NFL Draft.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Joe Thomas has declined an invitation from the NFL to spend draft weekend in New York, opting instead to continue a family tradition and go fishing with his dad.

But the talented offensive tackle from Wisconsin could actually wait longer for a nibble on his hook than from a future employer, given his status as a likely top-five pick.

Wisconsin offensive tackle could be selected as high as No. 2 overall by the Detroit Lions in the NFL Draft.
The highest rated offensive lineman in the draft, Thomas possesses an ideal combination of size, athleticism and upper body strength. Equally effective against speed and power rushers, the 6-7, 311-pounder is extremely quick and agile for his size.

“I’m a technician," Thomas said when asked about his greatest strength as a player. "I’m a guy who won’t settle for anything less than perfection when it comes to all aspects of my game.”

Thomas enrolled at Wisconsin in 2003 as a tight end before being switched to defensive end in the Music City Bowl against Auburn. He started every game at left tackle the next two seasons and was mulling whether to turn pro when an injury made the decision for him.
