What i meant was that if they spent their pick a good offensive or defensive prospect instead, maybe the game wouldn't be close enough to be lost by a kicker..I just don't see drafting a punter or kicker in the first unless you have no holes to fill.
Instant gratification, I guess thats what they were looking for. A rookie kicker, you know what you are going to get. If JS had lived up to 1/3 of his potential, he would easily be the best kicker in the NFL. This is a dude that was supposed to have a 60 yard range.
1973 Raiders took Ray Guy K/P at pick 23
1978 Cardinals took Steve Little K at pick 15
1979 Saints took Russell Erxleben (actual spelling) at pick 11
It didn't happen in the 80's or 90's. It didn't happen again until the Raiders took S-Bass, only 3 taken in the 1st round in 37 years and The Raiders took two of them

Chris Boniol should have been a top 5 pick
I never said it was smoart, I was just saying at the time it was clear what the Raiders were going to do. They have always had a history of the abstract. Many time it has worked in their favor, many time it hasnt
It may have surprised some, but it was common knowledge that the Raider wanted Janikowski, and odds were they were going to take him in the first
It was only common knowledge that they were inetersted in him. At #17 was a surprise to almost everyone except Al Davis. Yuo can look at almost any article from that time and that (along with the lack of expected trades) heads the lists of surprises.
Remember when the Redskins traded into the first round a couple years back and it leaked that they did it to get Jason Campbell almost a round before anyone else wanted him? THAT IMO is when it's common knowledge and you dont hear anything about it. Janikowski at #17 was a huge surprise because they said they were interested and no one they were THAT interested.

I still disagree. With everything that was said leading up to that draft, everyone knew the Raiders were going to take SJ. Mabey they figure they would trade down, but it was well known that they were going to take Janikowski in the first
