Yea, watching Johnson play vs Syracuse in the bowl game, he just blew me away. He has great size, runs a 4.39 forty, and makes the circus catches and has soft hands. Hes going to be great in the future.

I like Dwayne Jarrett more, but those three are the best. I was disappointed that Byle just wasn't given the ball considering the other WRs were dropping everything coming their way.

Hes got all those numbers and 4.4 speed, hes definitely going to be a first day pick, even if he doesnt do anything special next year

I watched him yesterday. He big, but I guess those stats are way inflated. He's an awesome athlete, but he can't play football. He'll go high and be a bust IMO.

I myself hate basing prospects on their numbers alone, but workout numbers play such a huge role in scouting they just cant be ignored. Personally I like basing my prospects on game film and having that speak for their speed, strength, etc, but the combine plays a huge role, and has a huge effect on where they get drafted. I dont think Nande will be very good, but he will be drafted much higher than he should because of his workout numbers. I think another LB, Rob McCune from Louisville will go much higher than he should because hes going to put up great workout numbers

I agree. These types always go to high and are usually busts because they cannot play the game they are drafted to play. Numbers are important as they indicate a player's upside, but the guy needs to be able to play the game too. Just look at guys like Junior Siavii who was a backup at Oregon. The Chiefs took him in the first last year because of his athletic ability and upside. Same with Devery Henderson to the Saints. Both will be busts and both went too high because of numbers. You obviously need to be strong and fast to play in the NFL, but the most important thing is the player's ability to actually player football.

It drives me nuts. And then, if a guy runs a great 40 time, hes automatically a great player. Al Davis kills us every year when he drafts the combine mvp in the 40 time (Justin Fargas, Carlos Francis) and while its unfair for them to truly be labeled busts currently, they both will be. I know Al is going to keep an eye on Airese Currie and Courtney Roby because theyre going to be running 4.3 forties, and one of them is probably going to get drafted by us, just because Al loves workout numbers as much as anyone. With prospects at pro days running on different tracks than prospects at their pro days, (I remember the Ohio State track being called one of the fastest tracks and has led to faster forty times for Buckeye prospects) and with a prospects draft position depending on 0.1 of a second (most of the time less) I doubt were getting their true forty time. One of my favorite quotes is No football games were ever won in shorts (which was really reffering to minicamps, but the same applies to the combine) tons of prospects Ive seen run much faster or much slower on tape then they do in the combine. Junior Siavii can bench a lot, as can Isaac Sopoaga, but so can Brock Lesnar.
I bet if the Combine was a preseason event for some reason, it wouldnt matter much at all, and game film would play the huge role it should and the combine information really wouldnt matter much. But thats sadly not the way it is.
Game Film>Combine

I was going to bring up the point you made about Lesnar. If he was younger and came straight out of college he could have been a top 10 pick with that ridiculous bench, squat and his forty time. He's never played the game, but that didn't stop the rise of other guys who are in the same position. I actually really like Courtney Roby and think he's an underrated player, but I see your point regarding Currie. ACC track star that can play football, will work out well, will rise to day one, will be reached for, will spend a few years on a team, will get cut, will end up in NFLE/CFL.

Yea, Im a little unfair to Roby because I like him too, and he did play on a poor offense with a bad QB, but even he will go higher than he should because his forty time is going to be crazy. Id rather have Al draft him than Currie, I agree with your assumption about him
