Thumbs up

Who is the best defensive back in this years draft, who has the most potential to come in and contribute to a team right away?

Jimmy Williams DB 6’3 216 Virginia Tech
By: Robert Davis

You will not find many defensive backs that have proven to be major talents at two spots in the secondary. Jimmy Williams has done just that. As a sophomore in 2003 at the free safety position, Williams racked up 114 tackles, four for loss, and two interceptions. As a junior, he was moved to corner to take advantage of his athleticism and he turned in another standout season. From his corner sport, he finished the year with 60 tackles, 5.5 for loss, and five interceptions.

Williams brings great size to the secondary. He has the height to match up with any receiver on the field, and the strength to overpower most wide receivers. He combines that power with very good athleticism and great speed. He is an all around threat in the secondary. Williams will hit you hard but will also run step for step with you down the field. His versatility and experience at two spots will increase his value come draft day.

Even though he has the speed and has been a standout college corner, Williams may not project very well at corner in the NFL. He doesn’t have the greatest fluidity in his turns, and will often lose ground on smaller receivers because of their quickness.

Even if he is not a corner, Jimmy Williams should be a standout player at the next level. His playmaking ability and aggressiveness as a free safety could make him one of the best safeties in the game. He should be able to play corner against the bigger wideouts in the league, but there are legitimate concerns about him covering the smaller receivers. If a team feels he can play corner, he could be the first corner selected. Most likely though, he will be viewed as a safety prospect and should still hear his name called in the first frame.

Michael Huff DB 6’1 205 Texas
By: Robert Davis

Michael Huff has been a playmaker since stepping on to the field as a freshman in 2002 for Texas. He earned freshman All American honors after finishing the season with 70 tackles, 10 for loss, and two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns. As a sophomore, Huff tallied 66 tackles and two interceptions, with both of those being returned for touchdowns. Huff earned All Big 12 and All American honors as a junior, finishing the year with 73 tackles and two picks. He also ran track for Texas in 2004.

Huff is one of the more versatile defensive backs in the draft. He has experience at both safety and corner, and has had success at both. He has a nose for the football at either spot, and breaks well on the ball. Playmaker is the best word to describe Huff. He has all the tools to be a standout defensive back at the next level. He's got good size, he's athletic, and he's fast. His versatility makes him even more intriguing.

Playing both safety and corner has left him a little unpolished at both positions. He needs to show more discipline at safety because he always good for the big play. At corner, he relies on his athleticism too much and will need work.

Huff has the talent to play whatever position he wants to play. I believe he projects better to safety because he is more ready to play at that position at the next level. He will need some time to learn the corner position. As a free safety, he brings excellent playmaking ability and would be a great cover man for any secondary. Individual workouts after the season will determine where teams feel he will be better served playing, and will ultimately decide his draft stock. He could go anywhere in the Top 50 with quality workouts.

Darnell Bing S 6’2 220 USC
By: Robert Davis

Darnell Bing came to USC with very lofty expectations. Before playing a down for USC, he was given Mike Garrett’s #20, and from that point on, he has had huge shoes to fill. When he’s been on the field, he has lived up to those expectations. As a true freshman in 2003, Bing made 69 tackles and picked off 2 passes on his way to being named to virtually every Freshman All-American list around. As a sophomore, he was dinged up a bit all year, but still managed to produce 63 tackles, 8 for loss, and 2 interceptions.

You could not dream up a better physical specimen at safety. Bing has excellent size, is strong, athletic, and fast. On the field, Bing plays with a lot of aggression. He excels at attacking the line and stuffing the run. He hits like a linebacker, and makes you think twice about crossing the middle. Darnell also shows the athleticism and speed to play in coverage. Bing may not have amazing statistics, but his impact is much greater than they lead you to believe.

The biggest problem with Darnell Bing has been staying healthy. He has been consistently banged up during his time at USC. He has had multiple shoulder and leg injuries, and has had troubles with his hip this season. When healthy, he is an impact performer. But he has played quite a bit at less than 100% and it has left him vulnerable in deep coverage.

Physically and based on his play when healthy, Darnell Bing has the ability to be a rare Top 15 pick as a safety. The problem has been staying healthy though, and that is going to hurt Bing come draft day. He will likely rank as the top safety on most teams boards regardless, but he’s going to need a strong post season circuit to put to rest the lingering health issues. If he stays healthy, Bing will be a Pro Bowl safety someday.

Michael Huff is a damn fine football player. I'd be tempted to call Bing the second best in terms of talent, but I think Williams is a little more of a finished product.

Alan Zemaitis.

Hes the strongest CB in the draft by far and has a real knack for getting INT's. He's the best Cover2 (the best defense in the NFL) CB in the draft, you put him in Tampa, Chicago or Indy and you have an All-Pro... easily.

If not AZ, this CB from Wyoming looks like a good player.. Ive only seen a few highlight tapes of him though.

Charles Gordon aint bad nor is Anwar Phillips but stay away from Jimmy Williams. He's an overrated headcase you wont want on your Football team.

IMO, Antonio Cromartie will be the best of the bunch. He's got great size to match up against these freakishly big receivers in the NFL, top notch speed, great hips. With more experience he'll be a top corner in the NFL. His only concern will be health issues.

Michael Huff will be the steal in the draft. Jimmy Williams, as great of a player he is, has issues with his attitude. Although he does rank high on the draft charts and the guy plays shut down corner. But we'll see in the NFL cause everyone gets burned.

A sleeper is Will Blackmon. Too bad he plays WR now. But, he would be a great CB in the leauge.
